Internation Women's Day - 100th Anniversary
Tuesday, March 08, 2011
Today we celebrate the 100th Anniversary of International Women’s Day, on this day women from all around the world connect and celebrate the significant changes in society’s thoughts about women’s equality, liberation and social achievements of women past, present and future.
International Women’s Day has been observed since the early 1900’s and today thousands of events are held to inspire women and celebrate these achievements.
Performer and social activist, Annie Lennox will lead a mass march across London’s Millennium Bridge for charity.
In 27 countries International Women’s Day is now an official holiday. The tradition sees men honouring their mothers, wives, girlfriends, colleagues with a gift of appreciation.
Generally the day has moved away from its socialist Suffragette beginnings to become more conventional in celebrating women’s achievements. Although, Women’s rights campaigners continue to remind that vigilance rather than complacency is essential in striving for women’s equality.
Personally I do not think any of us can accurately state the appreciation and debt we owe to the Suffragette movement, their strength, commitment and vigour to stand up for what they believe in, is an inspiration beyond words.
In my family I have been fortunate to be surrounded by many courageous and inspiring women, this is also true within my career. Today I pay tribute to them, the Suffragette movement, to women who tirelessly campaign for equality and for women everywhere who are facing their own battles in everyday live.
